Books in Homes was established in 2000 by retired teacher Val Morris when she recognised the need for affordable and culturally relevant books and teaching material for educators and children who have little or no access to such resources in rural communities.
Books in Homes found a new home with Penreach in 2018 within the Literacy and Numeracy programme.
More than half a million books have been placed in thousands of schools and communities throughout under resourced schools and homes in South Africa and further afield.
Storybooks, readers and charts are available for pre-school to senior primary level. Books from Penreach Books in Homes are found in 460 Reading Camps across Mpumalanga reaching 16 000 children on a weekly basis. These books are often the first book a child will own.

“It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa, that all children in the world may experience the wonder of books and that they will never lose the capacity to
enlarge their earthly dwelling place with the magic of stories.”- Nelson Mandela
