Penreach Celebrates the Class of 2024 d-lab Graduates

MBOMBELA – Penreach proudly celebrated the graduation of 20 young leaders from the d-lab Programme last week Friday, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards work readiness and personal growth. This inaugural cohort, which completed their training at the Penreach Shalamuka STEAM Centre, has not only acquired valuable skills but has also demonstrated resilience, creativity, and a commitment to shaping a better future.

d-lab is dedicated to equipping economically disadvantaged youth with critical skills in design thinking, digital literacy, and problem-solving – preparing them for the fast-evolving 4IR workplace. The programme consists of a rigorous nine-month curriculum split into two phases: an intensive preparatory training phase, followed by hands-on apprenticeships within industry innovation and product design teams.

For many graduates, this experience has been transformative. Zinzi Thobela, a graduate, shared how the programme enhanced her ability to think creatively, master the art of storytelling, and navigate AI-driven digital landscapes. Fellow graduate Prince Sewela described the journey as “inspiring” and one he wished would never end. Their reflections echo the programme’s success in fostering both professional and personal development.

The programme’s impact extends beyond the classroom. Supported by a range of funders, including the Get It Done Foundation (GIDF), d-lab embodies the belief in young people’s potential to drive change. “Celebrate today, but also start paving the way for the next person standing here next year,” emphasised GIDF trustee Zonke Ngidi, reinforcing the trust’s commitment to building a capable and empowered society.

During the ceremony, Penreach COO Susanna Behrendt acknowledged the dedication of the graduates, facilitators, and partners. “This journey has been about more than acquiring skills – it’s about growth, collaboration, and shaping a brighter future. To our graduates, congratulations! This is just the beginning. Take what you’ve learned, keep growing, and inspire others.”

Graduates leave today not only with their d-lab certificate but also with internationally recognised credentials, positioning them strongly for future opportunities. As they embark on the next chapter of their journey, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make meaningful contributions in their communities and industries.

Penreach remains committed to nurturing young leaders and looks forward to welcoming the next cohort of change-makers. Here’s to the future – where potential meets opportunity!
