2023 was an exciting and inspiring year for Penreach. It was a year of tremendous growth of the Penreach team geographically, operationally and professionally. We held each other accountable, we were committed to our responsibilities, we did what we set out to do, and we approached all of this with a deep sense of respect for each other and for our partners.
Our dedication and hard work has enabled us to build the best version of Penreach I have seen and experienced yet.
Thanks to the leadership, passion, and rigour of our teams in five provinces, and our strong operational execution, we met our audacious funding goals, improved our efficiencies and ensured greater impact for our beneficiaries and social investors. MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
We focused on expanding our interventions in areas that make sense and that use the opportunities for radical collaboration with others. In the last year we embarked on 8 new collaborative projects across Mpumalanga and Limpopo. We partnered with other great organisations including JumpStart, Ecubed, Care for Education, Ubuntu Maths Institute, Global Teachers Initiative, Click Learning, Edulution, The Reach Trust, Trackosaurus, Red Ink, Raise the Children and Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy to bring a range of interventions from early childhood to primary school (Grade 7) to 321 learning sites in these two provinces alone.
In terms of our geographical expansion, the School Readiness Initiative (SRI) expanded into Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) in 2023, and Penreach also took over the implementation of the SRI project in Limpopo province at the end of the year. This added 199 schools to the total cohort receiving support on improved Grade R teaching and play environments, bringing the total number of SRI schools to 284 for the year. RADICAL COLLABORATION
AND GEOGRAPHICAL EXPANSION
FOCUSING
ON PEOPLE
We recognize that our people are our superpower and continue to support them to do the best work of their lives. In 2023 we mapped our staff as well as our intern journeys to ensure we add value to the experience along the whole course of people’s time at Penreach. Our full-time team grew to over 100 by the end of 2023. Our Change Agents, administrators, support team, cadre of 126 interns and our leadership team ensure that we remain rooted in our communities and connected to the beneficiaries whose daily lives we impact on.
We remain committed to fostering a workplace culture that inspires collaboration, empowers individuals, and cultivates the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. We are pleased to report that we achieved our goal of increasing internal progression with four interns promoted into the Penreach team and two new leadership roles also being filled internally.
Our Wellness Team continued to touch on important issues like health, personal care through events, counselling sessions and information sharing. The take up rate and engagement in Wellness Activities remains high and I am pleased with the way our team is taking care of themselves and each other. REPORTING STRONG
FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE
I am satisfied that we achieved strong financial performance. We exceeded our planned budget by R10m in what remains a constrained funding environment. With the current state of education, there appears to be a growing need for strong implementers with a local connectedness to beneficiaries, which is what Penreach does best.
I am also excited about the relationship we have established with Raise the Children which has helped to expand the Penreach Bursary programme, with another steady increase in numbers in 2023 to 25 scholars in Mpumalanga (24) and KZN (1). Through partnerships, we will continue to broaden these opportunities for more gifted and talented children.
As we enter the another year of our strategic plan, we will continue to focus on achieving our fundraising goals and leading our operations with discipline. We will seek to unlock further opportunities, and face challenges head-on. UNLOCKING
FUTURE POTENTIAL
I am proud of our well-balanced programmes and exceptional team and am convinced that 2024 will bring a wealth of possibilities for us to keep transforming education in South Africa. While the macroeconomic and political environments remain fluid, our organisation is resilient, and I trust in our ability to navigate change with agility, vigilance, and discipline.
I include a review of our achievements aligned to the Penreach strategic milestones for 2023, which gives evidence to our team’s steadfast commitment towards efforts to unlock opportunity for One and All South Africans.

COMMUNITIES
All Gr R children should have access to quality education by 2030.
Chief Mogale's commitment didn't end with the classroom. He volunteered to aid in establishing a natural playground, demonstrating ongoing dedication to the school's development. The entire community rejoiced in the outcome, proud of their collective achievement. Penreach's intervention had ignited a spark, empowering the community to take ownership of their school's improvements and fostering a renewed sense of pride. Through collaborative effort and effective leadership, the Sabie Circuit had transformed, proving the transformative power of community engagement through programs like SRI. SUCCESS STORY School Readiness Initiative
In 2023, St. Pitas School in the Sabie Circuit faced a critical challenge: a makeshift Grade R classroom housing 37 learners, lacking the basic necessities for a conducive learning environment. The principal voiced his frustration to a visiting agent from Penreach, highlighting the community's disengagement from school projects. Recognising the urgency, the agent catalyzed a community meeting, where Chief Mogale made his inaugural appearance. Inspired by Penreach's advocacy, the chief committed to prioritising the construction of a proper classroom. With his pledge to donate funds, the community united, contributing both labor and materials. Within a month, a new classroom stood proudly, a testament to the community's newfound sense of purpose and collaboration.
This transformation wasn't just about erecting a building; it symbolized a significant shift in mindset. The once passive community had become proactive, embracing their role in their children's education. Parental meetings became lively forums for discussion and action, culminating in the decision to build a Grade R classroom from scratch. The iron roof sheets were replaced with sturdy walls and a roof, offering Grade R students a safe and conducive space to learn.
SUCCESS STORY
Transformative Impact of SRI in Sabie Circuit Penreach's impactful expansion to KwaZulu-Natal was marked by a significant partnership with the KZN Department of Education. Together, we officially launched a transformative initiative to provide tablets to Early Childhood Development Centres in the uMkhanyakude District. This collaboration underscores our commitment to delivering quality education, aligning with both the Department's constitutional mandate and the South African National Development Plan 2030. During the launch, MEC for Education, Ms Mbali Frazer, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in achieving educational goals. This initiative not only provides essential tools like tablets preloaded with educational content but also lays the groundwork for capacity building among ECD practitioners. With 100 tablets distributed in the initial phase, equipped with tailored storybooks and assessments, we are empowering learners and educators alike. The event saw the presence of dignitaries including MEC Frazer, Umkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor Mr Siphile Mdaka, and Penreach CEO Mr Andile Ncontsa, who engaged with interactive exhibits showcasing educational tools like coding, robotics, and mathematical puzzles. Feedback from principals and Senior Management Teams (SMTs) underscores the transformative impact of our training initiatives, particularly in utilizing the Curriculum Tracker and School Self Evaluation (SSE) tools. Principals and SMTs have expressed how these resources significantly enhance their day-to-day operations.
Previously, District Heads (DHs) faced challenges in effectively tracking curriculum progress. However, with the implementation of the Curriculum Tracker tool, they now find it streamlined and efficient. This tool has become instrumental in providing DHs with the necessary support to monitor curriculum adherence effectively. Moreover, the introduction of SSE training has revolutionized the process of developing School Improvement Plans (SIPs).
Previously, Principals tackled this task in isolation, often lacking comprehensive data. Now, equipped with SSE training, Principals and their entire SMTs collaboratively engage in SIP development, armed with evidence-based insights into their school's needs. This holistic approach ensures that the SIPs are grounded in real data, fostering more informed decision making and impactful strategies for school improvement.
