Joanne van der Walt, Manager of Sage Foundation South Africa and Adelaide Ngema

Adelaide Ngema is a Penreach Reading Camp volunteer who resides in the Pienaar area near Vukasambe Primary School. In 2016, she was honoured for running the most successful Reading Camp at a Stakeholders Consultative Forum hosted by Penreach at Bundu Lodge.

To date, Adelaide’s Reading Camp has 241 learners including the Reading Buddies – Intermediate and Senior Phase learners who come to assist the Foundation Phase learners in activities at the Reading Camp. The impact of the work she is doing in her community has not gone without recognition. She has been identified by Boxer Stores and Shoprite as a recipient of food parcels to feed the children who are attending the camp. In addition, the South African Police Service, SAPS, have pledged to build a structure in her yard to shelter the children attending the Reading Camp because her garage has become too small to accommodate them.
